MARTIE

The sound of the phone ringing down the hall wakes us both. I lift my head just as Charlie starts to sit up. I crack the top of my head on his chin and I hear the sound of teeth knocking together.

“Oww, are you okay?” I ask, rubbing my head.

“We are going to be waking up together a lot more from now on, let’s not make that a thing we do every time.”

I chuckle.

The phone rings again, and Charlie jumps out of bed to go pick it up before it stops ringing. I admire his nearly bare muscled form as he pads out into the hallway and picks up the phone. There’s some muffled talking I can’t hear. I lay my head back down on the pillow.

“Martie?”

“Yeah?”

“It’s Viv.”

I sit up and pull at the sheet off the bed and wrap it around me. I walk out into the hallway, my steps quieted by the knee-high socks still on my feet. Charlie turns and hands me the phone. He leans down and kisses my bare shoulder as he walks back to my room.

“Hello?”

“Why haven’t you called me?” Viv snaps.

“What do you mean? Charlie said he called this morning to let you know that the road down the mountain was still blocked.”

“Yes, he did. But you didn’t call me to let me know everything was okay.”

“I’m sorry. I should have. I just got so caught up in everything over here.”

“Everything? What are you talking about?”

I turn to look and see if Charlie is standing by the door. I can hear the sound of the bed squeaking, but I still lower my voice, so he doesn’t hear me.

“Charlie is amazing.”

“Charlie Knight?”

“Yes. Of course.

“But you just met him.”

“We hung out all day together. We cut down and decorated a tree. We talked about everything and nothing. It was amazing.”

“Wait.” There is a shuffling sound and I assume she’s moving the phone away so no one at her house can hear her. “Are you falling for him?”

“I think so.”

“You barely know him.”

I wait a moment to see if the fear of earlier comes back, but it doesn’t. All I feel in the swell of happiness in my heart. “When you know, you know.”

“With Charlie?” She asks again.

“Why do you keep saying it like that?”

“I don’t know. I never really thought of him that way. Odie and him, were on the baseball team in high school together but that was it. I don’t really know him. But then again neither do—”

“Stop Viv.”

“Okay, okay.” She sighs. “I was calling to tell you that my dad heard the roads were going to be cleared later tonight. He was going to come up and get you but I think that maybe you have other plans this Christmas Eve.”

“I think that’s safe to say.”

“Okay, I’ll tell my mom,” she pauses. “Something. I guess.”

“Thank you. I owe you one.”

“Well when you have your first daughter, you can name her Viv.”

I chuckle. “Done.”

We hang up and I head back into the bedroom. Charlie has his jeans on and he’s sitting on the edge of the bed.
